SAN DIEGO -- It's official: Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome is making a move to play in the Major Leagues in 2008.

Fukudome informed his team in Japan, the Chunichi Dragons, that he will not return next season.

"I won't be playing for a Japanese club next season, I'll play in the Majors," Fukudome told the Associated Press. "I appreciate the fans who supported me for nine years. I hope that the fans continue to root for me when they see me playing in the United States."

Now all that's left for the 30-year-old Fukudome is to decide where he'll play and, according to his agent, Joe Urbon, that could happen quickly, possibly as soon as Tuesday.

The Padres and Cubs are believed to be the finalists for Fukudome's services. Both teams have submitted offers, with the Padres' one of the biggest in franchise history, according to CEO Sandy Alderson.

The Padres are believed to have offered Fukudome a three- or four-year deal in excess of $10 million a season. The Cubs' offer might actually be close to $50 million, according to some reports.

As of Monday afternoon, Padres general manager Kevin Towers didn't have a gut feeling either way how this would end.

"The agent has kept it close to the vest," Towers said. "All I know is that it's come down to two cities. From a geographic standpoint, I think we're attractive. Money certainly plays into it, and the competitiveness of the ball club."

Corey Brock is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens told Mike Wallace of "60 Minutes" that he never used performance-enhancing drugs and said his former trainer, Brian McNamee, only injected him with the painkiller lidocaine and the vitamin B-12.

A CBS release gave a brief overview of the "60 Minutes" interview, which was taped last Friday in Houston and will air Sunday night. The interview marked the first time Clemens spoke with a reporter in person regarding the allegations. Clemens plans to meet with the local media on Monday in Houston.

When asked by Wallace if McNamee had ever injected him with any drugs, Clemens, according to CBS, responds: "Lidocaine and B-12. It¹s for my joints, and B-12 I still take today."

Clemens calls the accusation "ridiculous" and says he "never" used any banned substances. "Swear?" Wallace asked. "[i] swear," Clemens said.

The Clemens-McNamee saga began on Dec. 13, when the Mitchell Report named Clemens as having used performance enhancing drugs in 1998 and 2000 and 2001. McNamee, who had a 10-year professional relationship with Clemens, provided the information to Sen. George Mitchell and his investigative team.

Drug Policy in Baseball

Clemens issued several statements through his attorney denying McNamee's claims and two days before Christmas, Clemens issued a video denial that he posted on his personal web site as well as youtube.com.

The fight between Clemens and McNamee likely won't end with this interview. According to several New York Times reports, McNamee hired Richard D. Emery, a lawyer who specializes in libel and defamation, and the two said they would consider suing Clemens if Clemens says on "60 Minutes" that McNamee was lying when he said he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs.

HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee have been asked to testify before the House Oversight Committee at a Jan. 16 hearing, according to an Associated Press report published Friday.

The Committee had already planned to conduct a hearing on the Mitchell Report on Jan. 15, but according to the AP, it extended the meetings to a second day, with Clemens, McNamee, Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch and Kirk Radomski asked to be in attendance.

Clemens, Pettitte and Knoblauch were all named in former Sen. George Mitchell's report that detailed rampant use of performance-enhancing drugs for more than a decade. McNamee was a key witness in report and identified, among others, Clemens and Pettitte as users of performance-enhancing drugs.

Radomski, a former clubhouse employee for the New York Mets who admitted providing anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and amphetamines to numerous Major League players, was also a key witness for Mitchell and his investigators.

ST. LOUIS -- Albert Pujols is willing to forgive, but he clearly hasn't forgotten.

On Monday, Pujols made his first extensive public comments since his name was falsely reported to be contained within former Sen. George Mitchell's report on illegal performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. And he made them with the local FOX affiliate in St. Louis not in the room.

An erroneous report that started with WNBC in New York was picked up by a number of outlets on the morning the Mitchell Report came out. KTVI, FOX-2 in St. Louis, was one of the more aggressive outlets in reporting the story -- even sending reporters to Pujols' restaurant in St. Louis County.

As a result, when Pujols held his media availability on Monday afternoon at the annual Cardinals Care Winter Warm-Up, he insisted that KTVI not be permitted to record the session. He addressed a wide range of topics, from his recuperating right elbow to the direction of the Cardinals' franchise, before the reports came up.

When first asked, Pujols indicated he had no desire to rehash the situation.

"I don't want to go through that," he said. "Because if you want to hear how I feel, it's going to get real bad here. So we don't want to start that. And I think you should respect that."

In a follow-up question, Pujols was asked whether he planned to take any legal action in the wake of the reports. He said he did not, then started to express the depth of his displeasure with the story.

"It's a good thing that it happened so that the people out there in the United States and here in St. Louis, they can look at it and say 50 percent of the things that you guys write are not true," he said.

"I'm really disappointed about the media in St. Louis, whoever from Channel 2 or FOX that started that thing here in the city of St. Louis. I didn't appreciate that. If it was New York or somewhere else, I wouldn't care. But here in St. Louis? My people? It hurt. It hurt."

A WNBC representative in New York declined further comment on the matter. The station issued a correction, clarification and apology later in the afternoon of the day the report was released.

Pujols, however, had no reservations to comment further. He was particularly peeved with KTVI, which he felt was slow to make amends.

"Just like [you're] excited to write something negative about you, be that excited and apologize to everybody that day or that hour -- not two days later," he said. "That's not right, two days later. No matter what he says, I know I'm forgiving whoever did it, I forgive them. But there is nothing they can do to clean this up. They ruined that image."

KTVI acting news director Audrey Prywitch also declined comment.

Asked if he felt any need to prove himself all over again in light of the report, Pujols didn't hesitate.

"I don't have to prove myself," he said. "Since 2001, I've been proving myself with the numbers. I've been proving myself every year. How much better can I get? Only God knows how much better [I can] get. But do I need to cheat in this game to get better? This is nothing for me.

"Baseball is just a hobby, man. God has blessed me. And I fear God too much for me to do a stupid thing. I fear him. If I do some stupid things to help me out, to hit .400 or three-something or hit 30 home runs, he's going to take that away from me. So why not be the natural guy like I've been since I was in the Minor Leagues? To cheat in this game, that's not right."

Matthew Leach is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
